SAUNDERSFOOT has something for everyone. Around the working harbour from which you can go on fishing trips, there are beaches that stretch from Amroth and Coppet Hall to Monkstone Point and beyond providing miles of beautiful sands, safe waters and rock pools and caves to explore.
There are many lovely easy walks in and around the village such as the path through the old railway tunnels that hug the coast leading to the pub at Wiseman's Bridge or you can follow the leafy route to the Old Iron Works at Stepaside.
Throughout the year, Saundersfoot plays host to many organised events such as the annual Cawl Trail, Big Bang Weekend, the St Nicholas Christmas Market and the famous New Year's Day Swim (calendar of events).
TENBY is only three miles away with its famous coloured houses round its picturesque harbour, ancient town walls and four blue flag beaches. From there you can take a boat to Caldey Island and its monastery.
WILDLIFE There is lots of wildlife to see. Further up the coast from Tenby is Skomer Island, which is home to fulmars, razorbills, guillemots, kittiwakes, oystercatchers, choughs and possibly the largest colony of Manx shearwaters in the world. Puffins nest in burrows on the cliff-top and wander across the paths right up to your feet. Spring and early summer are the best times to see the puffins as this is when they bring sand eels back to their young. The waters around Skomer are part of the Skomer Marine Nature Reserve, one of only three such reserves in the UK. From the cliff-top you can watch the dolphins, seals, common porpoises and if you are lucky, you may even catch sight of a basking shark.
BEACHES There are many other fine beaches along the coast including Little Haven, Broad Haven, Barafundle and Manorbier. In June the nearby waterlilly filled lakes of the Bosherton Ponds are a glorious sight.
DIVING, COASTEERING AND SURFING For scuba divers there are many wrecks and islands to explore. Dive Pembrokeshire, is based at Milford Haven. Surfing and windsurfing are popular activities, especially at Freshwater West. Many companies offer tuition to learn to surf or accompanied coasteering trips.
HISTORICAL BUILDINGS If you like ancient buildings and history, then you'll be spoilt for choice, with Pembroke Castle, St Davids Cathedral, Pentre Ifan prehistoric burial ground and Black Pool, Carew Castle and Manorbier Castle. The bluestones of the Preseli Hills were transported to help construct Stonehenge, and there are countless other walks along rivers, estuaries, through woods and little valleys in a continuously varying rural landscape.
GARDENS If you're travelling to Pembrokeshire along the M4 keen gardeners may want to drop into the National Botanic Gardens of Wales near Carmarthen or take a slight detour to the historical Aberglasney Gardens near Llandeilo only a few miles off the M4.
The National Trust's Colby Woodland Gardens near Amroth which is well worth a visit with its beautiful Manor House, sumptious food served in the tea rooms and magnificent display of trees and plants.
